Professional Stump Grinding Across Monroe County
After a tree is removed, the stump left behind is more than an eyesore. It's a tripping hazard, a magnet for carpenter ants and termites, and an obstacle that prevents you from mowing, landscaping, or building in that part of your yard. Spartan Tree & Landscape eliminates the problem with commercial-grade stump grinding — we grind the stump and major surface roots to 6–8 inches below grade, mix the chips back in, and leave the area ready for topsoil and seed.
Why Grind a Stump?
- Reclaim your yard: An old stump takes up usable space. Grinding removes it so you can plant grass, install a patio, or simply have a clean lawn.
- Eliminate pest habitat: Decaying stumps attract carpenter ants, termites, beetles, and fungi. Removing the stump removes the food source.
- Stop regrowth: Many species — especially silver maples, willows, and elms — send up aggressive suckers from a live stump. Grinding kills the root crown and ends the cycle.
- Improve curb appeal: A rotting stump in the front yard drags down the look of your entire property. One grind and it's gone.
- Prevent tripping hazards: Stumps partially hidden by grass are easy to miss and dangerous, especially for children and elderly visitors.
How Stump Grinding Works
We use a self-propelled stump grinder with a carbide-tipped cutting wheel that chews through the stump and roots in a matter of minutes. The machine is compact enough to fit through a standard backyard gate, and powerful enough to handle stumps up to 36 inches across in a single pass. Larger stumps simply take a few extra passes.
The grinding produces a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. We rake the chips back into the hole to fill it level with the surrounding grade. If you'd prefer the chips removed entirely, we can do that too — just let us know. The result is a flat, clean surface ready for whatever comes next.
What It Costs
Stump grinding pricing depends on stump diameter, root flare, and access. Small stumps (under 12″) typically start around $100–$175. Medium stumps (12–24″) usually run $175–$350. Large stumps or stumps with extensive surface roots can range from $350–$600+. We offer discounts when grinding multiple stumps on the same visit. Every job starts with a free on-site estimate — no surprises, no hidden fees.
